I have been wondering about something. When you go on an adventure, at what point is it that you actually choose to go? Is it when you get to the airport, ticket in hand and bag on your back? Is it when you pick your dates and book your journey? Is it when the dream of somewhere new enters your head? Or is it some other time, when you just choose to break up your routine and do something different, just because?
There is something so exciting about booking flights. I have booked hundreds over the years, but I always get a thrill from seeing the destination spelt out on my ticket. It is like an invitation to adventure. And we are going on a seriously big adventure. We are moving to Japan and have booked our flights for the end of March. Not sure how long we will be away – it might be six months, it might be eight or nine. All I know is that it is going to be so special, and I cannot wait!

I love that question, Beth. My next adventure will unfold in East Africa, where I will continue my conflict management and gender-related work. It feels strange to start January in a whole new place away from my loved ones, but seeing the name spelled out on the ticket gives me the exact thrill you described. Happy holidays to you!
You’re absolutely right–seeing the name of a destination printed on an airline ticket is a total invitation. It brings a smile to my face thinking about it.

I have no ideas what adventures I’ll be taking in 2012. I guess, I’ll just have to wait and see.

The inception of an adventure… I think it must be different for everyone. For me, it’s the moment I realize, “Well, I can’t back out now.” I have a tendency to come up with crazy adventure plans at a rate of ten a day, so when one actually comes to fruition it’s a small miracle.
My 2012 adventures include first moving to Colombia for three months for studies, and then on to Russia for two months to volunteer and explore.

Beth, I totally agree! The moment that screen pops up and says, “Thank you for your reservation,” my heart starts to beat really fast and I get so excited. This is really happening! I am so looking forward to 2012: I’m headed to Japan, the Philippines, Israel, home to see my family (yay!) and then back to Alaska to work for the summer. It is going to be an amazing year!

I think it’s the moment the thought enters your mind and your days are spent in the fantasy of it… it may be months before it actually happens – but the journey has still started I think.
My girls are 1 and 4 – when they are about 8 and 11 we plan to take them to india…. For us the journey has already commenced! Happy celebrations, travels and holidays to you!

Well i believe the point of adventure begins when i conjur up an idea for the first time and begin exploring it…when i start to picture myself in the situation ive devised

Great question! To me, I feel like I have adventures every day as soon as I open the front door. However, I truly feel like my travel adventures start when I first book the trip.
Im planning on packing my car with essentials and driving to Europe from south west England stopping to volunteer on farms along the way.
