Pleasure Picnics

post and image by Denise Andrade

One of my most vivid memories when in Vienna, Austria in my early twenties was a picnic at the Vienna Kursalon with friends. Blankets were peppered throughout the grass surrounding us with tourists and locals lazed about, drunk with wine, cheese, bread, fruit and music from an outdoor orchestra.  I remember feeling every soul should experience this.  I also remember telling myself to not forget how breaking bread on a blanket under the sun or moon with loved ones can shift hearts in beautiful and romantic ways.

Following a deeply moving photo session a few weeks ago, my friend/client and I decided to do much of what I remember in Vienna all those years ago.  Even though this field was not too far from where I lived, I felt her and I were transported to another country and time.  This blanket layered with many forms of pleasure for our senses quieted the daily stress of our lives and the voices that tell you not to indulge.

It was romantic.  So romantic… And inspired me to pour more energy into creating environments like this not only when I travel but also right down the street from my home.  Or even on my hardwood floor.

We all need pleasure picnics.  What would you serve at yours?

Oy Mama! I am so sorry. Send me the invoice for both ads for sept and oct, love!

You’re the best! Thank you!

And bohito, I have a proposal for you. I know you are a busy gal, but I’m gathering a little team of friends to be regular contributors at GGG. Jen Gray is doing the road trip tunes, Xtine is doing the travel journal column, Marianne is doing a yoga, humanitarian thing, etc etc…

I was hoping you’d be into joining the team :) I’m not sure where this will take us, but eventually, I want to publish a real Guide with bits and pieces of all of us. I think of you as the Californian Bohemian Goddess and you could write about just your lifestyle: your dreads, your yummy juices, teas, lotions, clothes, jewelery, everything the gypsy boho girl can cultivate whether she is backpacking, jet setting or at home. What do you think?? NO pressure. I just want you to know I’d love to include you. If you have other ideas about theme, I’m totally open too.

Hey lovey

I sent you payment tonight. Sorry for the delay. My lil girl ended up in the ER this past Friday, so it’s been tough here. She is fine now, but she got an infection and had to go on antibiotics and because she was under 8 weeks we had to go to emergency. So stressful! But she seems to be on the mend now.

You need to send me another invoice for another hundred, bohito, because you’re holding 2 of my sites, no?

Love you madly xoxx

oh my goodness!  that is so hard and scary…especially when they’re little sprites.  when cedar was born, we had to stay in the hospital longer because of his breathing.  it can be such a helpless feeling.  what kind of infection did she have?  so relieved to hear she is on the mend, mama.  oh she is so beautiful and angelic, isn’t she?

yes, i am holding to of your sites but i feel weird charging you for both!!!

oy! thank you, love! i will extend my sponsorship then indefinitely… at the end of oct i will send you another 2 months (nov.dec), sounds good. at least paying two at once makes me feel a little better.

gabi had some kind of staph infection. she got a little bump on her skin like a bee sting that kept getting more and more infected in less than 24 hours. i took her to her pediatrician and he sent us to er, saying they would have to operate to burst the infection. from 2-7pm i was in the hospital and they were talking about all the things they might do, iv antibiotics (on her lil hand), put her to sleep to make the incision, put a tube down her throat to control breathing while she was asleep during the procedure, etc etc. they tortured me to no end. at the end of it all, the head pediatric surgeon showed up and said she did not need anything, just take the oral antibiotics and do warm soaks to pull the infection out. which was a relief. but then, as soon as we got home around 8pm, the thing burst on its own! i’m so glad she did not have to go through the mini surgery to get that done. it was so much better for her that way. now she is on antibiotics which breaks my heart, because she is so little, but at least I know she will be safe… i love her so much! isn’t it crazy how we get attached to these little monkeys?

oh i wanted to check in with you about the posts on my blog again. what i want to do is to start a series of regular contributor posts. i’d love for the space to shape up to be about inspiring a “life explored”: through travel, information, consciousness about the world and environment, generosity, soul searching, art and a bohemian lifestyle. you can blog about any of these things. the posts can be conversational, essays, visual or they can be about somthing you saw that inspired you and fits in with the theme of the blog. i would love to shape this up similar to shutter sisters, but more in a magazine way eventually. i’d love for it to be a place to have sponsored giveaways and also eventually market our own ecourses, retreats, books, cards, posters, etc, that represent the “life explored” concept (to fund the site and pay for our work). this is a big shot and i’m still trying to make sense of what i really want. it is only my intuition driving it at this point. i really would love to have you, so you can bring your sensual, loving, bohemian vibe. i think you are a master of soul searching/ self excavation and you also have a delicious free spirited goddess way of living and loving yourself and others.

here are the others so far:
swirly – travel art journals, possibly focusing on journeys of all kinds, art
marianne – humanitarian issues, middle east, peacekeeping, change making, change makers, yoga and spirituality
jeanine caron – stories and essays focusing on travel, adventure, photography
leonie (nz) – travel stories, soul searching, photography, poetry
jen gray – soul searching, road trip tunes
myriam (joy spread the word) – food, love, soul searching
bobbi (bobbi in france) – expat stories, soul searching
liz kalloch – travel, art

i am searching for a couple of more girls to write from australia, asia and south america. i haven’t found the right peeps yet. in the meantime, to fill out the space, there will be about 4 guest posts per month. in addition, i am collecting 2 interviews per month: did one with maggie, there is one with letha in the works, one with kate williamson (a year in japan) and so on so forth.

anyhow, i am opening for contributors to choose if they want to do one or two posts per month. Ideally, i’d love two, so we can keep the group to 12. each contributor will have a certain date to post every month. ex: jeanine posts 1st and 3rd wednesdays to go up on thursdays.you will all have login to my site to go in and post/ schedule on you own.

gosh. sorry for such a long note. in the end it is simple! we all post and see where this goes ;)

let me know what you think!

If you have other ideas about theme, I’m totally open too.

hello my love.

i totally dig your description of me.  ; )  if you want to describe me this way on your blog, i’m all for it.  hee hee.

i really would love to have you, so you can bring your sensual, loving, bohemian vibe. i think you are a master of soul searching/ self excavation and you also have a delicious free spirited goddess way of living and loving yourself and others.

this might help explain that my guest posts won’t be so much about travel (unless i travel) but more about the things you described in me.  i wasn’t sure if i was a fit if i wasn’t a world traveler right now but now i see how it could all fit in.

in all honestly, i could probably fit in one post a month.  my ecourse begins in march and i am still wondering how i am going to do my ecourse and take most care of cedar (as my hubs works a few jobs).  so i promised i wouldn’t commit to too much.  there is a chance my schedule will open up and i can go to two posts, as needed.

i am SO honored to be part of these gypsy girl sisters!  and i love the vision you are having for this blog, perhaps magazine, maybe even book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  you rock and its such a beautiful work of art my love.

my website is going to be up next week.  so this will all be great timing.  xoxox

that hospital trip sounds sooooo torturous.  oh love…i cannot imagine.  doctors are so quick to fix things, so i am glad your wee one’s lil bod knew exactly what to do all on its own.  our bodies truly are healing vessels.  that must have been exhausting and traumatizing, though…

i love you.
i just posted a video on my blog of me singing like a dork to cedar.  ; )

oy! thank you, love! i will extend my sponsorship then indefinitely… at the end of oct i will send you another 2 months (nov.dec), sounds good. at least paying two at once makes me feel a little better.

gabi had some kind of staph infection. she got a little bump on her skin like a bee sting that kept getting more and more infected in less than 24 hours. i took her to her pediatrician and he sent us to er, saying they would have to operate to burst the infection. from 2-7pm i was in the hospital and they were talking about all the things they might do, iv antibiotics (on her lil hand), put her to sleep to make the incision, put a tube down her throat to control breathing while she was asleep during the procedure, etc etc. they tortured me to no end. at the end of it all, the head pediatric surgeon showed up and said she did not need anything, just take the oral antibiotics and do warm soaks to pull the infection out. which was a relief. but then, as soon as we got home around 8pm, the thing burst on its own! i’m so glad she did not have to go through the mini surgery to get that done. it was so much better for her that way. now she is on antibiotics which breaks my heart, because she is so little, but at least I know she will be safe… i love her so much! isn’t it crazy how we get attached to these little monkeys?

oh i wanted to check in with you about the posts on my blog again. what i want to do is to start a series of regular contributor posts. i’d love for the space to shape up to be about inspiring a “life explored”: through travel, information, consciousness about the world and environment, generosity, soul searching, art and a bohemian lifestyle. you can blog about any of these things. the posts can be conversational, essays, visual or they can be about somthing you saw that inspired you and fits in with the theme of the blog. i would love to shape this up similar to shutter sisters, but more in a magazine way eventually. i’d love for it to be a place to have sponsored giveaways and also eventually market our own ecourses, retreats, books, cards, posters, etc, that represent the “life explored” concept (to fund the site and pay for our work). this is a big shot and i’m still trying to make sense of what i really want. it is only my intuition driving it at this point. i really would love to have you, so you can bring your sensual, loving, bohemian vibe. i think you are a master of soul searching/ self excavation and you also have a delicious free spirited goddess way of living and loving yourself and others.

here are the others so far:
swirly – travel art journals, possibly focusing on journeys of all kinds, art
marianne – humanitarian issues, middle east, peacekeeping, change making, change makers, yoga and spirituality
jeanine caron – stories and essays focusing on travel, adventure, photography
leonie (nz) – travel stories, soul searching, photography, poetry
jen gray – soul searching, road trip tunes
myriam (joy spread the word) – food, love, soul searching
bobbi (bobbi in france) – expat stories, soul searching
liz kalloch – travel, art

Moving Target

post by Bobbi French/ image by simplyhue

I recently wrote a post on my blog called Rootless Tree and it was my usual tongue in cheek fluff about everything and nothing related to running away to France to find a new life. In it I whined and waxed non-poetic about how I’d moved about 40 times in 42 years.

So up it went and I didn’t think much about it until I got an unusually snarky comment. Some guy wrote the following:

“Let me clarify. You are 40-years old and have made over 40 moves. Where did you find the time to finish medical school let alone practice medicine? Are you running from or to something? The man in your life must be very understanding.”

Hmmm. At first I thought about responding by telling him that he had no idea how understanding my husband is. That dealing with moving is the least of his concerns. Especially when he has to ride the PMS wave with me every month, poor soul! Wisely I left it alone.

But I must say that it did get me thinking. Of course I am running away from something, my life of lunacy in speed crazed North America. And of course I am running toward something, exploring a new way of life and a new way of being me.

But it’s easy to romanticize wanderlust isn’t it? It’s tempting to cast out the tedious details involved in packing it all in to run away with/from the circus (all depends on your perspective).

This guy clearly thinks I’m off my rocker. And maybe I am. Maybe I am a woman who forces their significant other into being ‘understanding’. But really what I think is that what this guy doesn’t know about my marriage is a lot.

Anyway, the post ended with me saying this:

“So hear me now. I am never moving again. No more will I taste the bitter packing tape as I rip it with my teeth because I’ve already packed every sharp object I own. No longer will I spend hours frantically trying to find the box that has the dental floss in it after eating a full rack of ribs at 2 in the morning. Never again shall I frighten the bejesus out of a sleeping husband by walking on sheets of bubble wrap on the 4 am tinkle run. Non, nein, nyet. No one can make me.

Okay, one more time in April but after that no more. Once again I’m making plans and all I can hear is god laughing her ass off.”

So my question to you is this: Is god laughing with me or at me?

Having Stuff

I Like Having Stuff. Print by And I Love You She Said.

by Leonie Wise

Tell me gypsies – have you ever packed up and moved and wondered what to do with all your stuff?

It’s something I’m thinking about a lot right now and I’d be interested in your thoughts on this subject.

Recently, I participated in an 8-week shed project… 8 weeks of downsizing. For me, the timing was perfect. We were  moving out of our flat and taking to the road again for 3 months. I didn’t want to keep everything, but I didn’t want to get rid of everything either.

But, while the shed project was great, it also got me thinking about things in my life that I do want to keep.
- For one, there’s the practicality of needing plates to eat off and sheets to sleep between.
- And secondly, I LIKE having stuff.

There are things I simply won’t part with. Art for starters. My collection of pottery, gathered on my travels is another. And now I really want to buy the print above to add to my collection….

But what do I do with all these things if I don’t have a home to put them in?

At what point should I stop collecting more pottery or art, knowing that it might be some time before I have another place to put them?

I just don’t know.

I am a traveller and a collector.
But these things don’t go well together when I am limited to just one bag.

Have you ever been in a similar predicament?
